Interior Painting: What to Expect from a Professional Crew

September 2026

Why knowing the process helps

Hiring painters for the first time can feel uncertain. How long will it take? Do you need to move furniture? Will the house smell? Knowing what a professional interior painting project looks like helps you prepare, compare contractors and spot the difference between a quality crew and a shortcut job.

Step 1: Free estimate and walkthrough

A professional painter should visit your home before giving a price. During the walkthrough they look at the rooms, measure surfaces, check wall condition, note ceiling heights and trim, and talk with you about colors and finishes. You should receive a clear written estimate listing which rooms and surfaces are included, the number of coats, the products used and the expected timeline.

This is the time to ask questions: Is the company insured? Who will be on site? How do they protect floors and furniture? What happens if you are not satisfied with an area?

Step 2: Choosing colors and sheens

Many homeowners already know their colors; others want guidance. A good painter can recommend sheens for each space: flat or matte for ceilings and low-traffic rooms, eggshell for living and bedrooms, satin for hallways and kids' rooms, and semi-gloss for kitchens, bathrooms, trim and doors. Testing samples on your walls is always recommended because lighting changes how colors look.

Step 3: Preparing your home

Before the crew arrives, it helps to remove small items, artwork and fragile decor. On the first day, the crew moves larger furniture to the center of the room and covers it with plastic. Floors are protected with drop cloths, and switch plates and outlet covers are removed. Hardware and fixtures are masked or removed.

Step 4: Surface prep

This is the step that separates professionals from amateurs. Holes and cracks are filled and sanded smooth. Nail pops are reset. Gaps along trim are caulked. Glossy surfaces are scuff-sanded so new paint adheres. Stains from water, smoke or markers are sealed with a stain-blocking primer so they do not bleed through. Repairs are spot-primed.

Good prep often takes as much time as painting itself, and it is the main reason a professional finish looks smooth and lasts for years.

Step 5: Painting

Professionals typically work top to bottom: ceilings first, then trim, then walls. Edges are cut in with a brush for sharp lines, and walls are rolled evenly to avoid lap marks. Most projects receive two finish coats for full, uniform color. Quality low-VOC paints keep odor to a minimum, so most families can stay home during the work.

Step 6: Cleanup and final walkthrough

When painting is done, the crew removes tape and coverings, reinstalls outlet covers and hardware, puts furniture back and cleans up. Then comes the final walkthrough, where you inspect each room with the crew lead. Any touch-ups are handled right away. You should also be offered leftover paint, labeled by room, for future touch-ups.

How long does it take?

A single bedroom typically takes one to two days. A few rooms may take three to five days, and a whole-house interior often takes one to two weeks depending on size and prep. Your estimate should give you a realistic timeline.

Red flags to watch for

Be cautious of contractors who give a price without seeing your home, cannot show proof of insurance, ask for most of the money upfront, or do not explain their prep process. Very low quotes usually mean skipped prep, cheaper paint or a single coat.
