Why seasonal maintenance matters here
New England weather is tough on homes. Heavy spring rain, humid summers, falling leaves in autumn, and snow, ice and freeze-thaw cycles in winter all take a toll on decks and gutters. A little routine maintenance each season prevents expensive repairs like rotted deck boards, water in the basement, damaged fascia and ice dams. Here is a simple seasonal plan.
Spring: recover from winter
Spring is the time to assess winter damage. Walk your deck and look for loose or popped nails and screws, cracked or soft boards, wobbly railings and damaged stairs. Press a screwdriver into suspicious spots; if it sinks in easily, the wood may be rotting.
Clean the deck to remove dirt, mildew and leftover leaves. A professional deck cleaning with the right pressure and cleaner restores the wood without damaging it. Then clean the gutters, which often fill with debris, shingle grit and twigs over winter. Make sure downspouts are clear and direct water at least several feet away from your foundation.
Summer: protect the wood
Once the deck is clean and dry, early summer is a great time to stain or seal it. Sealers and stains protect wood from UV rays, moisture and mildew, and they bring back the natural color. A simple test: sprinkle water on the deck. If it beads up, the finish is still protecting the wood. If it soaks in, it is time to reseal.
Most decks need resealing every one to three years depending on sun exposure, foot traffic and the product used. Summer is also a good time to trim branches that hang over the roof and drop leaves into gutters.
Fall: the most important gutter season
In New England, fall is critical. Once the leaves drop, gutters fill quickly. Clogged gutters overflow, sending water down your siding and into your foundation, and they can pull away from the house under the weight of wet leaves. Cleaning gutters after most leaves have fallen, typically late October to November, is one of the best investments you can make before winter.
On the deck, sweep away leaves regularly so they do not trap moisture and stain the wood. Move planters and furniture off the boards to prevent dark marks and rot spots during winter.
Winter: prevent ice dams and damage
Clean gutters are your first defense against ice dams, which form when melting snow refreezes at the roof edge. Ice dams can force water under shingles and into your home. During winter, use a plastic shovel on your deck instead of metal to avoid scratching the wood, and avoid rock salt, which can damage decking. Keep downspout outlets clear of snow and ice when possible.
Signs you need professional help
Water spilling over the gutter edge during rain. Gutters sagging or pulling away. Stains or peeling paint on the siding below gutters. Water pooling near the foundation or a damp basement. A deck that is gray, slippery, splintering or covered in mildew. These signs mean maintenance is overdue.
Safety first
Gutter cleaning involves ladders and working at height, which causes many home injuries every year. If you are not comfortable on a ladder or your home has two or more stories, it is safer to hire a professional who has the right equipment and insurance.
